Eblana Photonics growth drive continues as funding reaches EUR 3.6 million June 6, 2002, Dublin - Eblana Photonics, a newly established provider of advanced laser communications products, has announced new funding that brings its total investment to EUR 3.6 million in just over one year.
Eblana Photonics is a spin out from Trinity College Dublin, the Irish National Microelectronics Research Centre and Enterprise Ireland, who are shareholders in the company. Other investment in the Company comes from a combination of Irish and US private equity sources. The new funding is being provided by ACT Venture Capital and Enterprise Ireland. Eblana's proprietary technologies allow for the first time economic manufacture of high performance laser components for deployment in mass market communications. Those products enable provision of high bandwidth communication services over fibre optic cable to mass business and individual consumers market. According to James O'Gorman, CEO Eblana Photonics, "With this latest funding we will begin moving our products from development into manufacturing and onward into the market. These products will allow communications service providers to economically deliver an exciting range of new bandwidth hungry services to private consumers and smaller enterprises; services such as downstreamed video, interactive video conferencing and video telephony and other new applications that we can barely imagine today". John Flynn, Partner at ACT Venture Capital, said: "Eblana's founders, James O'Gorman and John Hegarty have formed a truly exciting company and have demonstrated an impressive approach in the fusion of world class technology innovation and product development skills, so necessary in making a successful business. We anticipate that Eblana will become a key player in the global broadband Access communications services market which is only now beginning its roll-out." Eblana Photonics will grow its core team over the next six months with a focus on the recruitment of engineering, product development and sales/marketing staff. The company applies an outsourced manufacturing model using volume scaleable processes already proven in the wider microelectronics industry. According to O'Gorman, "Eblana's technology and manufacturing processes lend themselves to a lean, outsourced mode of component production while, at the same time, those technologies also ensure that our products define state of the art performance."
