Eblana Photonics raises extra $4.5m in funding

by Ailish O'Hora

Irish laser component company Eblana Photonics has raised an additional $4.5m in funding and has brought in a new investor in London-based venture capital firm TLCom Capital Partners.

This brings the total raised at the company to 7.75m since its foundation at the end of 2000. Existing investors ACT Venture Capital and Enterprise Ireland also participated in the funding.

According to figures filed at the Companies Office, Eblana Photonics lost 1.2m in its first year of operation.

The company was formed to commercialise technology in a venture between Trinity College and Enterprise Ireland.

Lasers are light-emitting components that are used in optical communications systems in the delivery of data at higher bandwidths than traditional copper systems.

"Eblana's technology uniquely allows outsourced production of high performance laser components to contract manufacturers, thereby meeting that market's growing demand for components delivered in high volume, at affordable prices and at the high quality levels demanded by the industry," said James O'Gorman, chief executive of Eblana Photonics.
