Irish Examiner, June 6, 2002 Eblana in venture capital funding by Ian Guider Eblana Photonics, a provider of advanced laser communications products, has secured a new round of venture capital funding, bringing its total for the year to €3.6 million. The new funding is being provided by ACT Venture Capital and Enterprise Ireland. Other investment in the company comes from a combination of Irish and US private equity sources. Eblana Photonics is a spinout from Trinity College Dublin and the National Microelectronics Research Centre. Eblana's proprietary technologies allow for the first time, economic manufacture of high-performance laser components for deployment in mass market communications. Those products enable provision of high bandwidth communication services over fibre optic cable to mass business and individual consumer market, it said. According to James O'Gorman, Eblana's chief executive, the funding will allow the company to move from developing products into manufacture. "These products will allow communications service providers to economically deliver an exciting range of new bandwidth hungry services to private consumers and smaller enterprises; services such as downstreamed video, interactive video conferencing and video telephony and other new applications that we can barely imagine today," he said. Eblana says it will grow its core team over the next six months with a focus on the recruitment of engineering, product development and sales/marketing staff. "Manufacturing processes lend themselves to a lean, outsourced mode of component production while, at the same time, those technologies also ensure that our products define the state of the art performance," he added
