roots
Eblana

Eblana Photonics has its origins in advanced research programs in photonics involving Trinity College Dublin, the Irish National Microelectronics Research Centre and Enterprise Ireland.

We owe the name Eblana to the Alexandrian cartographer Ptolemy, who flourished in the first half of the 2nd century. Ptolemy's famous maps place Eblana Civitas in the same location as today's Dublin city. For nearly 1500 years his maps were considered the most reliable and indeed formed the basis for the exploration of the New World.

Solid links with Trinity College Dublin, Dublin City University, Tyndall National Institute and other global centres of expertise in laser physics and semiconductor device fabrication, mean that Eblana Photonics is uniquely positioned to develop leading edge photonic devices for the burgeoning optical fiber communications market.

founders
James O'Gorman
james o'gorman
James is Eblana's CEO and has a PhD in Laser Physics. Before co-founding Eblana Photonics with Prof. John Hegarty in 2001, he was General Manager of Optronics Ireland in Trinity College Dublin. Prior to his career at Optronics Ireland, James carried out research in high speed lasers and data communications at Bell Laboratories, the R&D arm of AT&T (now Lucent Technologies).

John Hegarty

John is a Director of Eblana. He has a PhD in Physics and is the provost of Trinity College Dublin.

Prior to returning to Ireland and becoming professor of Laser Physics at TCD, John also worked at Bell Laboratories where he performed a landmark demonstration of DWDM transmission, recognised by Time Magazine as a key milestone in the development of communications technology
